Money principles, whether biblical or not, should acknowledge God as the owner of it all, as we are stewards of what He chooses to share with us. This recognition helps drive the decisions we make with the money.
Lifestyle
This takes into consideration the choices we make in our day to day that impact our lifestyle surrounding money. Maybe you’re offered a big promotion but it includes a lot of travel. Just because the offer of additional money is there, doesn’t mean that choice would fit your lifestyle. What is the lifestyle that God is desiring for our family?
Giving
It’s easy to get caught up in the things we want. But where does the priority of giving fall? It’s okay if you aren’t giving. Start where you are. The key is consistency and giving a little more today than we did yesterday.
Teaching
It’s critical to teach our children at a young age that giving is important. This isn’t always our favorite topic but it’s crucial to ingrain the value of giving from a young age. Children may not listen to us, but they certainly are watching us. Delayed gratification is a great way for them to learn patience. If you are buying anything and everything you want, what does that teach them?
Responsibility
So how long do we need to keep supporting our children? This is not a cut and dry circumstance for anyone. It’s natural to want to leave your children behind with something, whether it be money, property, items. This can unfortunately become very problematic for many people. It may impact your children’s judgment at any age. Lifetime giving is a great option. This way you can give smaller amounts over a long period of time and see how they handle it.
